Assembling kit for Oz masters world track champs

I got an axle kit from HED, to convert this old screw-on clustered disc into a fixed wheel for the track. It worked a treat! It was easy as to set up. I havent tried it out yet, the velodrome is probably a bit slippery at the moment. Hmmm bugger.... have just found a flaw with the HED kit. It only has the one set of threads, and there is not much room for a lock-ring.... which means I cant use the clever Miche styled carrier system I just bought. You can slip a very thin lock-ring on if you are using standard cogs, but its threaded the same way anyway, so its just for decoration. A trick for young players.

My buddy Humpy has lent me his Raceline Record with Miche crankset, so that should be a bit faster than my old "Pex" . A couple of new chains and some bars and I should be rocking.

I will put a negative rise stem on to improve my cda. Its easier than making more watts. I have an idea on what kind of watts I will need to be competitive, and its another 70 watts over what I estimate I made at the nationals. I am not sure how easy it is to grow another 70 watts for 3kms but I will be monitoring my progress closely with the power tap.

Hi!!! I think I have the same problem as you. I have an old HED tubular Disc Wheel. I just can't find anything to make it fixed. Just wondering does that really work? I believe mine has a free wheel hub on it and the mech. said nothing out there will make the wheel fixed. I'm so disappointed. Please point me to the right direction.

Thanks

It definitely works Alan.
Goe to the HED website. Order the fixer kit and specify that its for an old style screw-on disc. I installed mine easily. There is room for a very skinny lock-ring which is most decorational : )

The only thing you cant do is use those cool new Miche styled cassette sprockets on them. Just a standard screw-on sprocket like most people use.

Hello el jefe,

I spoke with the mech. at a local bike shop and he said it's not safe to ride on street with that kit. Because he said the cog will spin out when I'm back padeling.

Please advise if you have any of those issue.

Thanks
Alan

I have never unwound a sprocket from fixing on the road, but then I ride up some pretty step hills which means they dont wind off easily, I usually have to use a vice, as chain whips are not strong enuff. This kit is for the track, not the road. I dont know why you would be riding a disc on the road, especially a tubular disc!

Hey Jefe, I just came across your link while Googling the Hed track axle kit. The people at Hed have been less-than-helpful by never returning my emails, so I'm wondering - which kit did you buy? We appear to have the exact same wheel, so whatever worked for you should be exactly what I need. Thanks.

When you order specify that it is for screw-on.

You can use a lock-ring from a left-hand side bottom bracket, which screws in the same direction as the actual sprocket, so its only there to satisfy the officals.
Read the other comments : ) Cheers. Jeff

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I know where they are on the website, I just wasn't sure which of the three options to select. There is the "Front/Rear," "Front," and "Rear - Add $30". I don't want to order and specify anything yet, because I'm not sure which one to order, and the people at Hed don't seem interested in replying to my emails.

So, since you appear to have the exact same model of disc, I was wondering which of the three you ordered.

Its the rear. But you must specify "old screw-on" style in the comments part of the order form.
